Bedouin Beadwork

The following pictures were sent to me by Orit Tykocinski of Israel and she kindly gave me permission to share them with you. They show examples of beadwork made by the Bedouin of Southern Israel and the Sinai Desert in Egypt.

The first is a fish that was purchased in Beer-Sheva. The second is a reproduction made by Orit in a combination of two-drop peyote and brick stitch. The fish are two-sided and stuffed for a 3D appearance.

These rosettes are made from two pieces of seed bead netting with larger beads sandwiched between them. The first was purchased from the Bedouin in Sinai and the second is Orit's reproduction.

Orit purchased this interesting net cigarette case in Eliat.

This netted pen cover was given to Orit by one of her students who got it from the local Bedouins in Beer-Sheva.

These 3D stuffed ornaments are often seen hanging from rear-view mirrors and the like. The coloring and design are traditional. The color blue is believed to ward off the evil eye. This particular example was purchased in Sinai.

Orit also sent the picture of the Bedouin necklace featured in part one of my Bedouin necklace series.
